How I Mined for Bitcoins: Buzzfeed's COO Simplifies ...

I literally have tens of thousands of dollars in top-shelf hardware, looking to repurpose some before selling on eBay to build a NAS system, possibly a dedicated firewall device as well. o_O

Q1) What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.**

A1) This will be a dedicated NAS system for my home network. As such, I'm looking to have it:

- Host ##TB's of 720, 1080 & up resolution Movies and TV Shows I'm about to begin ripping from a MASSIVE DVD & Blueray collection I have.

- My kids are big on Minecraft. I understand it's possible to host your own "worlds" (or whatever they call the maps you can build) on your own "server". I think it would be pretty neat to offer them (& their friends - if can be done 'safely/securely') their own partition on one of my NAS HDD's.

- I also have accounts with a couple diff VPN companies... I understand it's possible (?) to sync said VPN's with a NAS, this might be a more relative topic on the next point/purpose...

- I'd like to be able to remotely link to this NAS for when I travel overseas and want to stream at my temp location from my house/this NAS.
______________________
Q2) What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?**

* A2) Here's where I make matters more complicated than most others would... I've been an advocate for Bitcoin and crypto-currencies in general since 2013. I invested in a small mining outfit back in 2014 (strictly Bitcoin/ASIC's). One of my buddies is the President of a large-scale mining operation (foreign and domestic) and he convinced me to dabble in the GPU mining-space. I made my first hardware purchase in Q4, 2017 and launched a small-scale GPU-Farm in my house since then. I had the rigs mining up until Q3 of 2018 (not cost-efficient to keep on, especially living in SoFlo) and since then, the hardware's been collecting dust (& pissing off my family members since they lost access to 3X rooms in the house - I won't let anyone go near my gear). One of my New Years Resolutions for 2019 was to clear out the house of all my mining equipment so that's all about to go up on eBay. So "budget" is relative to whatever I "MUST" spend if I can't repurpose any of the parts I already have on hand for this build... (Anyone having something I "need" and is looking to barter for one of the items I'll list later on in here, LMK).
______________________
Q3) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.**

A3) IMMEDIATELY! :)
______________________
Q4) What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)**

A4) Well I had a half-assed idea approximately 1 year ago that it might be wise to build a bunch of 'gaming rigs' to sell on eBay with my intended repurposed mining hardware so I went on a shopping spree for like 6 months. That said; I've got a plethora of various other components that aren't even unboxed yet. 90% of the items I've purchased for this additional project were items that were marked down via MIR (mail-in-rebates) & what-not...
AFAIK, there are only 3X items I absolutely do not have which I 'MUST' find. Those would be - 1) Motherboard which accepts "ECC RAM". 2) CPU for said MOBO. 3) Said "ECC RAM".\*
______________________
Q5) Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?**

A5) I'm located in Southwest Florida. No Microcenter's here. Best Buy is pretty much my only option although I am a member of Newegg, Amazon & Costco if that makes any difference?
______________________
Q6) If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.**

A6) In an attempt to better clean up this Q&A, I'm going to list the items I have on-hand at the end of this questionnaire in-case passers-by feel like this might be a TLDR.* (Scroll to the bottom & you'll see what I mean).
______________________
Q7) Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?**

A7) I don't think that's necessary for my intended purpose although - I'm not against it if that helps & FWIW, I'm pretty skilled @ this task already (it's not rocket science).
______________________
Q8) Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)**

A8) As stated in A4; ECC RAM is non-negotiable... RAID seems like a logical application here as well.

- This will predominantly be receiving commands from MacOS computers. I don't think that matters really but figured it couldn't hurt to let you guys know.\*

- I'd also be quite fond of implementing "PFSENSE" (or something of that caliber) applied to this system so I could give my Netgear Nighthawks less stress in that arena, plus my limited understanding of PFSENSE is that it's ability to act as a firewall runs circles around anything that comes with consumer-grade Wi-Fi routers (like my Nighthawks). Just the same, I'm open to building a second rig just for the firewall.\*

- Another desirable feature would be that it draws as little electricity from the wall as possible. (I'm EXTREMELY skilled in this arena. I have "Kill-A-Watts" to test/gauge on, as well as an intimate understanding of the differences between Silver, Gold, Platinum and Titanium rated PSU's. As well as having already measured each of the PSU's I have on-hand and taken note of the 'target TDP draw' ("Peak Power Efficiency Draw") each one offers when primed with X amount of GPU's when I used them for their original purpose.\*

- Last, but not least, sound (as in noise created from the rig). I'd like to prop this device up on my entertainment center in the living room. I've (almost) all of the top-shelf consumer grade products one could dream of regarding fans and other thermal-related artifacts.

- Almost forgot; this will be hosting to devices on the KODI platform (unless you guys have better alternative suggestions?)
______________________
Q9) Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?**

A9) Definitely! Desired theme would be WHITE. If that doesn't work for whatever reason, black or gray would suffice. Regarding "Case Size". Nah, that's not too important although I don't foresee a mini-ITX build making sense if I'm going to be cramming double digit amounts of TB in the system, Internal HDD's sounds better than a bunch of externals plugged in all the USB ports.
______________________
Q10) Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?**

A10) I don't know. If I do need a copy of Windows, I don't have one so that's something I'll have to consider I guess. I doubt that's a necessity though.

Needless to say, I have at least 1X of everything mentioned above. In most all cases, I have multiples of these items but obviously won't be needing 2X CPU's, Cases, etc...

Naturally, I have GPU's. Specifically;

At least 1X of every. Single. NVIDIA GTX 1070 TI (Yes, I have every variation of the 1070 ti made by MSI, EVGA and Zotac. The only brand I don't have is the Gigabyte line. My partners have terrible experience with those so I didn't even bother. I'm clearly not going to be needing a GPU for this build but again, I'm cool with discussing the idea of a barter if anyone reading this is in the market for one.

I also have some GTX 1080 TI's but those are already spoken for, sorry.

It's my understanding that select CPU's I have on this list are ECC Friendly and AFAIK, only 1 of my MOBO's claims to be ECC Friendly (The ASROCK AB350M PRO4), but for the life of me, I can't find any corresponding forums that confirm this and/or direct me to a listing where I can buy compatible RAM. Just the same, if I go w/ the ASROCK MOBO, that means I'd be using one of the Ryzens. Those are DEF. power hungry little buggers. Not a deal-breaker, just hoping to find something a little more conservative in terms of TDP.

In closing, I don't really need someone to hold my hand with the build part as much as figuring out which motherboard, CPU and RAM to get. Then I'm DEFINITELY going to need some guidance on what OS is best for my desired purpose. If building 2X Rigs makes sense, I'm totally open to that as well...
Rig 1 = EPIC NAS SYSTEM
Rig 2 = EPIC PFSENSE (or the like) DEDICATED FIREWALL

Oh, I almost forgot... The current routers I'm using are...
1X Netgear Nighthawk 6900P (Modem + Router)
1X Netgear Nighthawk X6S (AC 4000 I believe - Router dedicated towards my personal devices - no IoT &/or Guests allowed on this one)
1X TP-Link Archer C5 (Router). Total overkill after implementing the Nighthawks but this old beast somehow has the best range, plus it has 2X USB ports so for now, it's dedicated towards my IoT devices.
---- I also have a few other Wi-Fi routers (Apple Airport Extreme & some inferior Netgear's but I can only allocate so many WiFi Routers to so many WiFi channels w/out pissing off my neighbors) On that note, I have managed to convince my neighbors to let me in their house/WiFi configuration so we all have our hardware locked on specific, non-competing frequencies/channels so everyone's happy. :)

Please spare me the insults as I insulted myself throughout this entire venture. Part of why I did this was because when I was a kid, I used to fantasize about building a 'DREAM PC' but could never afford such. To compensate for this deficiency, I would actually print out the latest and greatest hardware components on a word document, print the lists up & tape to wall (for motivation). I was C++ certified at the age of 14 and built my first PC when I was 7. At the age of 15 I abandoned all hope in the sector and moved on to other aspirations. This entire ordeal was largely based off me finally fulfilling a childhood fantasy. On that note = mission accomplished. Now if I'm actually able to fulfill my desires on this post, I'm definitely going to feel less shitty about blowing so much money on all this stuff over the last couple years.

TIA for assisting in any way possible. Gotta love the internets!

THE END.
:)

EDIT/UPDATE (5 hours after OP) - My inbox is being inundated with various people asking for prices and other reasonable questions about my hardware being up for sale. Not to be redundant but rather to expound on my previous remarks about 'being interested in a bartetrade' with any of you here...

I did say I was going to sell my gear on eBay in the near future, I also said I wanted to trade/barter for anything relative to helping me accomplish my OP's mission(s). I'm not desperate for the $$$ but I'm also not one of those people that likes to rip other people off. That said; I value my time and money invested in this hardware and I'm only willing to unload it all once I've established I have ZERO need for any of it here in my home first. Hence my writing this lengthy thread in an attempt to repurpose at least a grand or two I've already spent.

One of the most commonly asked questions I anticipate receiving from interested bodies is going to be "How hard were you on your hardware?" Contrary to what anyone else would have probably done in my scenario which is say they were light on it whether they were or weren't, I documented my handling of the hardware, and have no problem sharing such documentation with verified, interested buyers (WHEN THE TIME COMES) to offer you guys peace of mind.

I have photo's and video's of the venture from A-Z. I am also obliged to provide (redacted) electricity bill statements where you can correlate my photo's (power draw on each rig), and also accurately deduct the excess power my house consumed with our other household appliances. Even taking into consideration how much (more) I spent in electricity from keeping my house at a constant, cool 70-72F year-round (via my Nest thermostat). Even without the rigs, I keep my AC @ 70 when I'm home and for the last 1.5-2 years, I just so happened to spend 85% of my time here at my house. When I would travel, I'd keep it at 72 for my wife & kids.
Additionally; I had each GPU 'custom' oveunderclocke'd (MSI Afterburner for all GPU's but the EVGA's).*
I doubt everyone reading this is aware so this is for those that don't.... EVGA had the brilliant idea of implementing what they call "ICX technology" in their latest NVIDIA GTX GPU's. The short(est) explanation of this "feature" goes as follows:

EVGA GPU's w/ "ICX 9 & above" have EXTRA HEAT/THERMAL SENSORS. Unlike every other GTX 1070 ti on the market, the one's with this feature actually have each of 2/2 on-board fans connected to individual thermal sensors. Which means - if you were to use the MSI Afterburner program on one of these EVGA's and create a custom fan curve for it, you'd only be able to get 1/2 of the fans to function the way intended. The other fan simply would not engage as the MSI Afterburner software wasn't designed/coded to recognize/ communicate with an added sensor (let alone sensor'S). This, in-turn, would likely result in whoever's using it the unintended way having a GPU defect on them within the first few months I'd imagine... Perhaps if they had the TDP power settings dumbed down as much as I did (60-63%), they might get a year or two out of it since it wouldn't run as near as hot, but I doubt any longer than that since cutting off 50% of the cooling system on one of these can't be ignored too long, surely capacitors would start to blow and who knows what else...
(Warning = RANT) Another interesting side-note about the EVGA's and their "Precision-X" OveUnderclocking software is that it's designed to only recognize 4X GPU's on a single system. For miners, that's just not cool. My favorite builds had 8X and for the motherboards that weren't capable of maintaining stable sessions on 8, I set up with 6X. Only my EVGA Rigs had 3 or 4X GPU's dedicated to a single motherboard. Furthermore, and as stated in an earlier paragraph, (& this is just my opinion) = EVGA SOFTWARE SUCKS! Precision X wasn't friendly with every motherboard/CPU I threw at it and their extension software for the CLC Close-Loop-Cooling/ CPU water-coolers simply didn't work on anything, even integrating into their own Precision-X software. The amount of time it took me to finally find compatible matches with that stuff was beyond maddening. (END RANT).
Which leads me to my other comments on the matter. That's what I had every single 1070 ti set at for TDP = 60-63%. Dropping the power load that much allowed me to bring down (on average) each 1070 ti to a constant 110-115W (mind you, this is only possible w/ "Titanium" rated PSU's, Platinum comes pretty damn close to the Titanium though) while mining Ethereum and was still able to maintain a bottom of 30 MH/s and a ceiling of 32 MH/s. Increasing the TDP to 80, 90, 100% or more only increased my hashrates (yields) negligibly, like 35-36 MH/s TOPS, which also meant each one was not only pulling 160-180W+ (Vs. the aforementioned 115'ish range), it also meant my rigs were creating a significantly greater amount of heat! Fortunately for the GPU's and my own personal habits, I live in South Florida where it's hot as balls typically, last winter was nothing like this one. Increasing my yields by 10-15% didn't justify increasing the heat production in my house by >30%, nor the added electricity costs from subjecting my AC handlers to that much of an extra work-load. For anyone reading this that doesn't know/understand what I'm talking about - after spending no less than 2-3 hours with each. and. every. one. I didn't play with the settings on just one and universally apply the settings to the rest. I found the 'prime' settings and documented them with a label-maker and notepad. Here's the math in a more transparent manner:

*** I NEVER LET MY GPU's BREACH 61C, EVER. Only my 8X GPU rigs saw 60-61 & it was the ones I had in the center of the build (naturally). I have REALLY high power fans (used on BTC ASIC MINERS) that were sucking air from those GPU's which was the only way I was able to obtain such stellar results while mining with them. **\*
Mining at "acceptable" heat temps (not acceptable to me, but most of the internet would disagree = 70C) and overclocking accordingly brings in X amount of yields per unit. =
'Tweaking' (underclocking) the GPU's to my parameters reduced my yield per unit from -10-15%, but it SAVED me well over 30-35% in direct electricity consumption, and an unknown amount of passive electricity consumption via creating approximately 20%+ less heat for my AC handler to combat.

I say all this extra stuff not just for anyone interested in mining with their GPU's, but really to answer (in-depth) the apparent questions you people are asking me in PM's. Something else that should help justify my claims of being so conservative should be the fact I only have/used "Platinum and Titanium" rated PSU's. Heat production, power efficiency and longevity of the hardware were ALWAYS my top priority.* . I truly thought Crypto would continue to gain and/or recover and bounce back faster than it did. If this project had maintained positive income for 12 months+, I'd have expanded one of our sites to also cater to GPU mining on a gnarly scale.

Once I have my NAS (& possibly 2nd rig for the firewall) successfully built, I'll be willing/able to entertain selling you guys some/all of the remaining hardware prior to launching on eBay. If there's something you're specifically looking for that I listed having, feel free to PM me with that/those specific item(s). Don't count on an immediate response but what you can count on is me honoring my word in offering whoever asks first right of refusal when the time comes for me to sell this stuff. Fortunately for me, PM's are time-stamped so that's how I'll gauge everyone's place in line. I hope this extra edit answers most of the questions you guys wanted to have answered and if not, sorry I guess. I'll do my best to bring light to anything I've missed out on after I realize whatever that error was/is. The only way anyone is getting first dibs on my hardware otherwise is if they either offer compelling insight into my original questions, or have something I need to trade w/.

THE END (Round#2)

My theory: There was collusion, but Trump ripped off Russia in the deal and has us in a more serious situation than we think. A timeline.

I’m not usually a conspiracy theorist, but it all fit together too well to ignore. Feel free to poke holes in this, I’d like to be proven wrong.
The cold war never ended, it just moved online.
1991 - The cold war is declared over and the internet rises at a lightning pace. Much like the space program had before it. A cyberspace race. By nature of being the bulk of its inventors, the US is untouchable in cyber espionage. The NSA stockpiles all of the malicious code and secret vulnerabilities they can gather and rather than alert the world to them and help create fixes, they leave them active and turn them into tools for their agents to use against foreign powers. Eventually they also turn their attention inward and start using that software against their own people in a surveillance and manipulation program that dwarfs what the KGB had just been destroyed for doing.
2009 - Edward Snowden discovers the NSA running these programs and is outraged by the violation of rights and hypocrisy. He begins complaining in an attempt to get the system shut down and have our dirty little secret ended without national embarrassment. “I had raised these complaints not just officially in writing through email, but to my supervisors, to my colleagues, in more than one office. I did it in Fort Meade. I did it in Hawaii. And many, many of these individuals were shocked by these programs. They had never seen them themselves. And the ones who had, went, "You know, you're right. ... But if you say something about this, they're going to destroy you".
March 2011 – It’s discovered that the US military is developing software to create, spread and control social media sock puppet armies. They promise it’s to use against foreign enemies, we’re told that it’s illegal for them to use against US citizens. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2011/ma17/us-spy-operation-social-networks
March 2013 - James Clapper blatantly lies to congress and denies the existence of the domestic surveillance program entirely. Snowden says this moment is when he realizes his hope is futile and May 2013 he begins releasing evidence of the collected data to expose the program and force it to stop, then waits out the storm in Hong Kong.
I believe Snowden had an insurance policy. Along with the surveillance data that he had planned to release, he stole an NSA toolkit that would not be released. A drive full of the nastiest bugs and backdoors the NSA could invent that would be released to the public in the event of his death. The US government wouldn’t dare risk it.
July 2013 – The public outrage over what’s been exposed should be astounding…but it’s not. It seems like no one cares. And at this point the NSA knows the toolkit has been stolen, it could destroy us. Desperate times call for desperate measures. The anti-propaganda law is repealed, freeing the US government to use propaganda against its own people. Those sock puppet armies are turned against us and it’s made to look like the majority of the US public doesn’t care about surveillance. Even South Park runs an episode in September mocking people’s indifference to the NSA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Defense_Authorization_Act_for_Fiscal_Year_2013#Smith-Mundt_Modernization_Act_of_2012
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130715/11210223804/anti-propaganda-ban-repealed-freeing-state-dept-to-direct-its-broadcasting-arm-american-citizens.shtml
http://foreignpolicy.com/2013/07/14/u-s-repeals-propaganda-ban-spreads-government-made-news-to-americans/
A massive domestic spy program is uncovered and they get away with it. Snowden isn’t a national hero, no one cares and in mid June 2013 the US files charges against him. He took a shot at the king and missed. The US rescinds his passport and demands Hong Kong extradite him. He’ll use his stolen toolkit to avoid a death penalty.
Russia would have suspected Snowden had this insurance policy. They tell him to spite America, they’ll arrange a flight for him from Hong Kong to Ecuador despite his lack of passport, with just a short layover in Russia. The layover becomes permanent when they refuse to finish the flight due to that lack of passport. Russia tells him he now has a choice, hand over the toolkit or you’ll be killed here and your country won’t care. Russia doesn’t care if his death triggers the release, it’s their intention to do that anyway. He holds out for 39 days in the airport but on August 1st 2013 he caves, is given asylum in Russia and Russia is discretely given the master keys to the internet.
The NSA is in an impossible position. They should alert the world that their monster has escaped its cage and help us secure our systems from it. But to do that would be to admit an indefensible extent of surveillance and now manipulation they themselves had carried out for years. The people would overthrow them immediately. In addition, every vulnerability they fix removes it from Russia’s arsenal but also from their own. I suspect they were using some of those vulnerabilities to sabotage the North Korean missile and Iranian nuclear programs. To fix them now would be to let those programs progress unhindered. I suspect this sort of catch-22 is how the Obama administration originally justified the surveillance to itself. And so the US does nothing.
Russia now has almost unfettered access on the internet, a backdoor on every computer manufactured before that date. I believe their Kompromat program became limitless. I believe they gathered every secret that existed to be found, on every member of our government and corporate world and what couldn’t be found could be planted. I’ll reference this again on *April 8 2016. *
February 2014 - Emboldened by our silence Russia moves to take Crimea 6 months later. We do not stay silent.
March 2014 - Obama uses Crimea as a cover to impose crippling sanctions on Russia. It cuts their currency and GDP in half.
November 2014 - Sony suffers a massive hack. Supposedly, by North Korea in retaliation over a Seth Rogan movie. It’s embarrassing but mostly inconsequential. North Korea denies involvement, no one believes them. I believe it’s a message from Russia. “We have the weapon and we know how to use it.”
February 2015 – Kaspersky Labs, a Russian company, exposes to the world how deeply the NSA’s infiltration has gone. All hard drives have been shipped with an NSA backdoor preinstalled. http://www.businessinsider.com/r-russian-researchers-expose-breakthrough-us-spying-program-2015-2
Through 2015 Microsoft makes an oddly strong push to get us all to update to Windows 10. Even bootleggers can get a free upgrade. A disguised evacuation from the badly compromised XP, 7 and 8? Or pushing a new OS into the world to give the NSA a new playing field to regain an advantage on?
I suspect Putin now reaches out to Robert Mercer, financier of data mining company Cambridge Analytica. He offers to make Mercer an American oligarch. Putin will provide the most advanced data gathering tools the NSA could create, Mercer will use them to collect data that lets his candidates target voters with uncanny accuracy and win elections. Kushner later raves about the complexity of their marketing system. https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevenbertoni/2017/05/26/jared-kushner-in-his-own-words-on-the-trump-data-operation-the-fbi-is-reportedly-probing/#619dd401a90f
At the same time, Mercer will share that data with Putin who then uses botnets and other illegitimate means to influence the same voters, in the same direction, but without being visibly connected to the candidate. Later there will be controversy over a server in Trump Tower communicating with a Russian bank. I believe this is that sharing. http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/09/politics/fbi-investigation-continues-into-odd-computer-link-between-russian-bank-and-trump-organization/index.html
In 2015 Cambridge Analytica first backs Ted Cruz. The most hated man in DC and a proven track record of bringing the system to a grinding halt. The obvious choice. But Trumps bombastic personality and Cruz’s lack of one threatens the plan. In December 2015 when a Quinnipiac poll shows Cruz in second place behind Trump, Cambridge Analytica promptly dumps Cruz and picks up Trump. Sometime later Trump paranoidly projects that the only way Hillary can win is by rigging the election.
July 2016 - Trump wins the Republican nomination.
August 2016 - A hacker group called The Shadow Brokers makes the news. I believe this is Putin finally flaunting to the world what he’s done. They tell us they’ve stolen a toolkit from The Equation Group, who have been suspected to be the NSA. The files in the toolkit are NSA but only as recent as 2013, a few months after Snowden’s departure. I suspect the file dates were altered just enough to give Snowden deniability. They release half of them to the public as proof. It’s bad, we’re warned that a lot of horrible malware will come from this for years to come. And now that the code is public, those attacks could plausibly come from anyone. The other half is kept encrypted, promised to be worse, and they comically struggle and fail to sell it on the black market. No one seems willing to touch it.
November 2016 - Our election is hit by an unprecedented number of attacks. 5 per second 24 hours a day in Illinois. 150,000 total in South Carolina. 39 states altogether. Everyone who was anyone took Putin’s free gift and hit us with it. https://www.engadget.com/2017/07/17/south-carolina-150-000-election-day-hacking-attempts/
Trump wins the election.
His first, maybe only job, is to lift the sanctions. Russia needs it done yesterday. Instead, Trump immediately gets into a fight with the media over the size of his inauguration crowd and makes a wild claim of 3 million illegal votes.
I believe Cambridge Analytica using NSA tools, had the ability to analyze every American voter’s online habits and predict their vote. I believe they promised Trump a win over Hillary and gave him a very specific vote count. When Hillary wins the popular vote with 3 million more votes, Trump is paranoid that she must have added her own fake votes which threw his prophesized number. And maybe she did. But with no evidence that he can admit to the rest of us, Trump blames it on illegal immigrants and starts demanding voter information so that he can compare the numbers.
This eats Trumps fragile ego alive. For eternity his legitimacy will be questioned in history books. Trumps attitude toward Russia sours. “You promised me a win and cost me the popular vote, our deal is void.” Trump does what he’s done to so many of the people he’s worked with before and decides he’s not going to pay his end of the deal. He busies himself putting Gorsuch on the SCOTUS, the beginnings of his wall and an immigration ban, ignoring Russia publicly and privately.
The cold war warms up.
January 23 – Trump appoints Ajit Pai to head the FCC. He is hell bent on reversing net neutrality laws, making it legal to throttle or block websites to citizens. Later, congress claims this was a direct order from Trump. Along with being able to predict how people will vote based on their browsing habits, they’ll now be able to directly influence those browsing habits. https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/06/10-members-of-congress-rake-fcc-over-the-coals-in-official-net-neutrality-comment/
February 9 – Jeff Sessions is made Attorney General to defend Trump from both an angry Russia and angry Congress. He’ll later recuse himself and Trump will state that if he had known that he wouldn’t have hired him in the first place.
February 10 – Russia considers giving Snowden to US as a gift. https://www.cnbc.com/2017/02/10/russia-eyes-sending-snowden-to-us-as-gift-to-trump-official-tells-nbc-news.html
February 13 – Trump seemingly is not interested. Michael Flynn’s Russian connections are “discovered” by the White House and he resigns.
February 14 – Russia violates a cold war arms treaty and shows that it has been developing cruise missiles. “I can reach you.” It says to Trump. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/14/world/europe/russia-cruise-missile-arms-control-treaty.html
February 14 – Congress starts to question their too-good-to-be-true win and a republican senator calls for an investigation into ties between Trump and Russia. Most squabble over healthcare. http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/14/politics/kfile-roy-blunt-flynn-investigation/index.html
February 27 – Trump makes major cuts to agencies and dumps all $54 billion of it into defense spending. They’re going to need it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/trump-to-propose-10-percent-spike-in-defense-spending-massive-cuts-to-other-agencies/2017/02/27/867f9690-fcf2-11e6-99b4-9e613afeb09f_story.html?utm_term=.ed55293971c8
February 28 – Amazon has a major failure and the East coast US suffers an internet outage. http://bgr.com/2017/02/28/internet-outage-amazon-web-services/
March 7 – North Korea finally gets its missiles to survive launch and sends 4 towards a US base in Japan. I suspect Russia has made them aware of the vulnerabilities that had been plaguing their program. The US deploys its own missiles in South Korea. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/07/world/asia/thaad-missile-defense-us-south-korea-china.html
March 16 – Dan Coats, an anti-Russia senator is appointed by Trump as Director of National Intelligence, James Clappers old position. Kind of poetic really. A concept stolen from Russia, turned into a monster by Clapper, stolen back by Russia and used to remove Clapper, whose successor is now sent to kill it.
March 23 – Senate Republicans vote to allow the sale of citizen’s private browser history. Making the kind of data collection and manipulation I suspect Cambridge Analytica of doing, now legal for future use. https://www.buzzfeed.com/hamzashaban/the-republican-controlled-senate-votes-to-strip-internet?utm_term=.duwxxZYeY5#.sygwwvZkZj
March 30 – Michael Flynn offers to testify on Russia.
April 4 – 4 days after Tillerson had told Assad he could stay in power, Assad appears to drop chemical weapons on his own people. Assad denies it. The receiving hospital is also hit with conventional weapons in an effort to kill surviving witnesses. I believe it was Russia embarrassing the US.
April 7 – In response Trump hits a nearly empty airfield with 59 Tomahawk missiles. We’re told that it was retaliation against Syria and that Russia was warned beforehand and evacuated. I don’t believe they were. I believe Trump picked the most empty airfield shared by both Syria and Russia where damage would be minimal and bombed it without warning to either of them in an attempt to scare Russia. Russia condemns the strike and suspends air cooperation with the US. The airfield returns to operations the same day.
April 8 - The Shadow Brokers post an open letter to Trump that begins *“Respectfully, what the fuck are you doing?” * and telling him to remember his base, remember who got him elected. Again, I believe this is Putin speaking directly to Trump. He hints at the dirt he either has or can plant on McCain and Lindsay Graham, if only Trump will ask. The things he hints at are extreme. It is at this point that I now suspect Putin has gained this kind of information on a vast majority of our government and business world. Even if the blackmail victims are willing to face the shame to alert us to what’s happening, they’re warned that if the operations is exposed, everyone’s secrets will be released. The country would suddenly need a special election for half of its government and half of its corporations would crumble. It would be chaos. Mutually assured destruction. All anyone caught by Putin can do, is furrow their brow and be deeply disturbed.
In this same letter the Shadow Brokers ask Trump why he hasn’t yet filed charges against all powerful entities in the US. “Doing so, you could be seizing all their IT systems, freeze their financial assets, arrest key leadership.” This was a key step in Putin’s rise to power. I believe that even if Trump and Putin are having a couples squabble, Putin still needs Trump to remember this step. They release more of the NSA code as punishment. https://medium.com/@shadowbrokerss/dont-forget-your-base-867d304a94b1
The emergency siren system in Dallas is set off. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/04/08/hacker-triggers-all-156-emergency-sirens-dallas/100212412/
April 12 – Tillerson is sent to Moscow to meet with Putin to discuss tensions “over the Syria strike”. They are unable to come to agreements.
April 13 –Trump drops the Mother of All Bombs on Afghanistan for Russia to see.
April 14 - The Shadow Brokers dump more NSA exploits. Included in this batch is EternalBlue, one of the most destructive exploits that’s been seen in years.
April 14 – North Korea, whose missiles can now fly in a more or less straight line, threatens a preemptive strike on the US. The US threatens a strike back. Trump gets out of town and heads to Mar-a-Lago just in case. http://thehill.com/policy/international/328796-north-korean-official-warns-of-preemptive-strike-of-its-own
http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/u-s-may-launch-strike-if-north-korea-reaches-nuclear-n746366
http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/14/politics/donald-trump-north-korea-mar-a-lago/
April 15 – North Korea unveils an ICBM that can theoretically hit all of the United States. I believe that in exchange for stopping America’s sabotage of their nuclear program, NK is acting as Russia’s nuclear attack dog. He’s long wanted to be the one to do it. Now he’ll have Russian defense if he does.
April 21 - The power grids in New York, LA and San Francisco fail, it’s blamed on mechanical failure. https://www.inverse.com/article/30635-everything-we-know-la-nyc-sf-power-outages
May 9 – Comey is fired by Trump as he works on the Russian investigation. Trump justifies it by quoting and mocking Chuck Schumer with a tweet… *“Cryin' Chuck Schumer stated recently, "I do not have confidence in him (James Comey) any longer." Then acts so indignant.” *
May 12 – The Wanna Cry ransomware scares the world. Built from the previously released EternalBlue exploit, it begins in Russia and races across the globe, locking computers and demanding a bitcoin ransom. It looks to be a catastrophic infection. Our hospitals are particularly crippled by it. The name mocks Trumps own words days before.
May 13 – By dumb luck a kill switch is left in the Wanna Cry code and British security researcher Marcus Hutchins disables it by registering a $10 website domain. What should have been a ransom in the billions of dollars tops out at $130,000. https://www.malwaretech.com/2017/05/how-to-accidentally-stop-a-global-cyber-attacks.html
After the attack, Kaspersky Labs will identify North Korea as being the attacker. North Korea will deny it. Later, Kaspersky will be cut out of the defense budget and banned from US government computers. Later still, Kaspersky will file an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft, claiming that Windows 10 removes Kaspersky software from users computers when they upgrade.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/6/15745164/kaspersky-antitrust-complaint-microsoft-european-commission
May 27 – British airways has a massive system failure which they blame on outsource employee ineptitude. I suspect this is a warning to Theresa May in response to England preventing Wanna Cry. “Stay out of this.” http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/british-airways-caused-bank-holiday-10520182
June 7 – Amazon goes down. https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/7/15759046/amazon-product-pages-down-outage-offline-503
June 19 – A cyber analyst finds an unsecured Amazon server owned by GOP voter targeting firm Deep Root Analytics with almost all American voters records and analytics that predict who they will vote for and why. This confirms my suspicions that Cambridge Analytica used the same method to influence the presidential election. I believe that since the March 23 legalization of the selling of citizens browser histories, the GOP has been building its own voter prediction software in order to win the 2018 elections without help from Russia’s stolen data. http://www.zdnet.com/article/security-lapse-exposes-198-million-united-states-voter-records/

June 19 – Microsoft Skype goes down. https://techcrunch.com/2017/06/20/skype-outage-causing-connectivity-issues-company-says-its-a-global-incident/
June 27 – The Petya ransomware, built on EternalBlue, the second iteration of Wanna Cry, hits the world but seems targeted at Ukraine. Paying the ransom in this case does not unlock the data, Petya is tailored for maximum damage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_cyberattacks_on_Ukraine
June 30 – Microsoft Office 365 goes down. https://www.exoprise.com/2016/07/01/office-365-email-outage-june-2016/

Putin is livid.
August 3 - Marcus Hutchins, the man who saved us from Wanna Cry, is arrested by Trumps new CIA director on unrelated charges while he is in the US for a conference. He now faces 40 years in prison. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/aug/03/researcher-who-stopped-wannacry-ransomware-detained-in-us

What was it like being raided? GAME OVER PLEASE INSERT COINS.
Do you have any regrets about your involvement with those groups? Snowden, hero or villain? Why? There's no point regretting anything because you cannot undo the past. I heard about Snowden in prison, came on the news but I only know what the news has been telling me. I will look more in to it, he's got balls I can tell you that and I admire a good set of balls.
Really? Good set of balls? Are we not doing phrasing anymore? Yes really.
Any advice on learning how to program? I'm struggling with Python at the moment. You don't learn how to program, you learn how use a programming language, programming is what you do with that information. Read lots of examples of source code, see if you can work out whats going on. Don't just copy/paste the examples, write them word for word no matter how long they are. Not only will it help understand what it is doing better you may also learn a few tricks.
That's deep man. Thanks for the advice. No problem.
You don't learn how to program, you learn how use a programming language. Damn, pretty sweet quote there. It's also true.
How did you get started 'hacking'? I first started back in 1998 I mostly used to hack PC games, hex editing, binary reverse engineering stuff. Then I learned how to use C and assembly and it just went from there.
What do you recommend for someone that's interested in hacking(in terms of learning it)? Hacking is the art of reverse engineering, before you can reverse engineer something you need to have an in depth knowledge of it.
What are your thoughts on mass surveillance? Any advice for the masses? It's been going on longer than you or I have existed. Strong encryption is the key.
Ever considered a job with the NSA? GCHQ? I don't think I would pass the security clearance now anyways. I am x military though so who knows.
I am surprised you are allowed to use computers or the internet at all now considering some of the parole conditions of many American hackers. Can you talk about some of the restrictions in the SCPO and why you feel they are unfair? Basically it prevents me from using encryption that allows hidden volumes, virtual machines and I cannot delete my internet history. It lasts for 5 years and each breach of the order can be punishable up to 5 years.
It's not a case of them being fair or unfair. I can't go too in to detail about it if I want to take it back to court, I just want to challenge it, plus I like to keep my cards close to my chest.
So would say firefox's private browsing mode be against the rules? I don't think so, I'd have to check the src of firefox to determine if it deletes the history in private mode or if it simply does not record it in anyway. The order says "Not to delete".
So if you just image a fresh install of your variety of os(debian?) everyday would that break your parole? I could just boot live OS and not be in breach.
Is that what you do? I used to, remember slax?
Are you proud of the sacrifices you made in your lifetime? Yes I am, I never look back I just move forward in to the future hoping to find peace and happiness.
Did you meet anyone interesting in prison? There's some funny characters in prison I can tell you that, made friends for life. Most of the people in there were in there for fraud, drugs, gang stuff. I never met any famous prisoners if that's what you mean? Then again everyone's story in prison is interesting.
What is the best way to protect your digital identity, and secure your privacy? Since you have experience exploiting these vulnerabilities, what do you suggest to prevent it? Strong encryption, limit the amount of personal information you place on the internet, don't draw attention, only use a sandboxed browser and tunnel your HTTPS through SSH using the highest of encryption, PGP mail for every mail, don't store encryption keys on your computer, full disk encryption and/or hidden OS, use different emails for your banking, paypal etc, Mak3p4$5w0rdZ!nCr3d!b4LlYsTr0nG, uninstall flash use Link to youtube.com instead etc, etc...
Thanks for your answer. I am not worried about personal use, I am more worried about enterprise and or security systems. preventing people from hacking my companies website, and social media accounts. I have to keep in compliance with the financial standards, so we use PGP, and Erado, for archiving and encryption. It is just nice to get the perspective what is an easy target, what would you consider a difficult target not worth pursuing? I could write a book to answer this...
Security isn't something you can just apply it's an on going process and in most cases you are relying on products sold to you on a trust basis. You're told that Antivirus software will stop you getting a virus but what you're not told is that Antivirus software only protects you against what is known, takes less than an hour to write a new piece of malware or backdoor that your AV will never detect.
People put too much faith in to security systems without understanding how they work, their capabilities or limitations.
There's no need to be "pentested" it's a right con, they only test you against old exploits, if you update regular then you're already safe.
Use 2 factor authentication and/or strong password policy, prevent users creating the own password (they will only make them simpler)
Just make your data worthless to a hacker by encrypting it.
Insightful, thank you. I know it's a vague question, but you just confirmed my intuition. Thanks for your honest answers. No problem.
Was it worth going to prison? Nothing is worth going to prison for. Yeah they are happy I am back and I am happy to see them again. It was ~100GBP for my parents to come and visit me in prison, I was a long way from home. I told them not to waste their money because the visit only lasts 2 hours.
How is your family treating you, are they happy to have you back? Did they visit you in prison? I am x military I am used to being away from home for long periods of time. It also makes time fly faster when you're not constantly reminded about home. If you don't know what you are missing then you don't miss much.
I've never been to prison, but I lost about 8 years of my life due to bad medical advice. I used to be angry-- I was thinking why wasn't it only 2 years-- why did it have to be such a complete waste of so many years? Would that have happened if it had been only 2 years instead of 8? I don't think so. Sometimes, events like that helps to put things in to perspective. We often don't think about our lives on a day to day basis but when something out of the "norm" happens it makes us think that little more.
What do you think about bitcoin? where will it be in 10 years? I think it's great, scrypt coin too! I think they will get heavily regulated soon though. I had 78 bitcoins backed up on a SDHC before I was sent to prison. Back then they were worth ~$40 each. Come out of jail and I can't find that shit anywhere lol.
The only problem is even if I do find it, it's encrypted with keys that are on the computer the police confiscated and I can't get back.
I know right?
Sue them. They stole you $ 78k. It's killing me!
If they've not destroyed your computer or had a seize order against it then you can get back things like that. Ask your lawyer. They seized it in court, I can however apply "for a copy of evidence" under UK law and they would have to give me a copy of the HDD.
Do this. Those bitcoins won't last. How long untill they are orphaned? It's been ~3 years already.
No idea. I meant they won't last as a concept (especially not at that value). Wow, only just seen it but they peaked at ~$1000? Feels bad man.
Exactly - since then the Chinese and Russians have banned it, and you can only consider it's a downward spiral from there. I wonder how long it will last here in the west, I'm surprised it hasn't already been regulated the tax man must be pissed!
I think there are also more constructive uses for mining, I mentioned this on twitter also. See there are a lot of cancer researchers and scientists that have HUGE amounts of data that needs to be mined to help cure diseases and solve the worlds problems.
The world hash rate for crypto coins is more powerful than most of the worlds super computers combined. Cancer researchers should give coins for mining cancer research data instead of wasting time generating meaningless hashes.
Do you like sporks? Yes, I do, do you?
Hey man we are asking YOU the questions here. Leave the interrogations to us the professionals. Ok bro.
Ex Army eh? Signals? or Tech in REME? I was in the Infantry.
So how were you ID'd for arrest? I fucked up, I've already explained it on here, lurk moar.
Just curious, do you think big brother is reading this ama real time or at all? They will be on this like flies round shit.
Where does/did LulzSec congregate? What is the education background of a typical member, or from where did you learn to do what you can do? We had our own private IRCD and encrypted silc servers, also channels on public servers. I am completely self taught, I have been at it since 1998.
Isn't the true "lulzy" part of this that you guys bugged some people and mocked their security and then ended up getting busted and going to prison while the companies you annoyed made their security better? That's pretty lulzy to me. What I find lulzy is the fact they were all vulnerable to webapp vulnerabilites and don't use PGP.
Wasn't LulzSec responsible for the major Sony Online Entertainment security breach? I know you wanted to retaliate because SONY was suing George Holtz for the PS3 jailbreaking thing he did, but the only thing that happened is that you inconvenienced the people. Basically I am asking. Why did you ruin all those accounts, which lead to people having their credit cards stolen, instead of just attacking SONY directly. Also, how many accounts were compromised? LulzSec says 1000, SONY says ~4000. LulzSec had nothing to do with the PSN breach, fact.
Do you suspect who was responsible? (group name, not actual name) Honestly, no Idea there is too much internet rumor and no one has officially come forward to claim it. I read some people in Spain were arrested and questioned in relation to the PSN breach but that still doesn't mean it was them.
What are your political views? I don't really have any political views, however I would like to see the rest of the world get a chance to sample democracy and be free from oppressive dictatorships (no naming names).
At first welcome back. So here an total haxolulz/past unrelated question what kind of music do you like? I like Hard Dance music, Hard Trance/Hard House.
Fuck yeah! Trance and House all the way. I used to have a set of Technics 1210 Mk2 and mix like mad when I was younger, still got some of the vinyl haha.
Hackers soundtrack, orbitals by halicon. Not hard but one of my favorites. Thanks I'll check this out. The LuLzSec hacker song by ytcracker is the ONLY hacker song haha.Link to www.youtube.com
Who is your favorite Trance artist? Ever been to any festivals? Tidy boys, nothing but. Their events are awesome, youtube "Tidy weekender"
How came you guys got the cia down? It was hit with a 100,000 node botnet.
What does this mean in layman's terms? 100,000 computers were used to send ALOT of data to the server causing it crash.
That's as simple as it gets.
Any advice for aspiring hacktivists? Trust no one.
Still on 4chan? fav boards? Rules 1&2 always apply.
Hate to break it to you bro, but 4chan is just full of kids now. The rules of the internet have somewhat faded since you left the intertubes in 2011 :( consequences will never be the same again. Ebaums world has been dead a longtime because people broke 1&2
What's your opinion on the book by Parmy Olson? I think I recall she said she talked to you by chat, but how accurate was what eventually made it into the book? I lost the book before I could read it all so I don't know...
What do you think your job prospects are now with the conviction hanging over your head? Not too good! I'm on my arse at the minuet, I'll do any job!
Any job? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Allmost...
Write a book. Is it really needed?
Not needed per se. But you can tell an autobiographical perspective that nobody else can. The story lulz & Anon supporters would want to hear. Obviously not a 'tell all' but a 'tell most'? Yeah I get what you mean.
Was there a time before you were caught that you were worried or thought the authorities might have a clue as to your real identity? I knew I was going to get caught, I fucked up.
Did you have a backup plan? There was no backup plan but I realized the mistake early and acted accordingly! No I do not own guns, they're a lot more restricted here in the UK.
Are you still in touch with Jason? Saw he went to prison recently, I actually went to HS with him. How long did he get?
Jeremy, not Jason. Twins. Yeah, I think he got 10 years or something like that? I've not heard anything from him since I got out, hope he is ok.
I look up to you on how you managed to convince everyone you're a girl, smart and funny thing at the same time. Really I look up to you like a celebrity, hah. Maintaining a strong persona such as kayla and doing what I did wasn't easy. If I could go back in time I wouldn't change anything, I'd just keep going back in time to relive it over and over again. Nothing is worth prison time, it's a waste of life however I did manage to get some qualifications out of it. Not many people can say they left prison with a diploma for the thing they went in for.
If you could go back in time, before the creation of Lulzsec, what would you do differently? Also, was Lulzsec's missions worth the prison time? Where did you learn social engineering, and hacking? I learned to do what I do from programming, it is simply reverse engineering.
Thank you for your answer. What do you think about the Syrian Electronic Army, their methods of attacks, and their meaning? I honestly believe they are state sponsored (possibly not from the beginning) but I do believe they are the people Assad is turning to. As for their methods I don't even know what methods they are using, I'll read in to it though, I'm fresh out of prison and most of what they have done was done while I had no internet access. I've been banned from the internet since 2011.
That they are, got many of Advanced Replacements on products. If you had to choose between, Windows or OSX which would you choose. I'd choose Windows, I'm not a fan of OSX.
This is probably the longest I've ever seen someone take questions in an AMA. Thank you for dedicating so much time to answering people's questions. No problem I enjoy answering questions and I will be here until the questions dry up.
How did it feel being able to get behind a computer for a first time in 2+ years? Did you build a rig to re-live the novelty or do anything particularly special? Porn, me thinks. I was able to use computers in prison. I was given a job as a class room assistant helping teach people about computers, basic things. I also managed to complete a number of computer related qualifications and gained a diploma. Seeing the internet after 2+ years was kind of strange though. The internet looks a lot different now compared to how it did in 2011. To be honest I don't like it, it has that "iphone look" to it all, big buttons and lots of unneeded JS. I wish I could build a rig I just do not have the money to do so. Hopefully soon I will find a nice job and maybe then I will build one.
Did you have internet in jail? No they do not allow internet in UK prisons.
Do you think access to the internet should be a human right? When will it be? Yes it should be and I am sure it is already so!
Here you go Link to www.wired.co.uk
My question: Did you ever have any suspicions about Sabu? At any point did you guys think, Something is up with this dude? Everyone had suspicions about everyone, things were being patched, rootkits disappearing, logs being leaked etc..
Was prison anything like you had expected it to be? Better than I thought it would be, I had most prison movies flashing in my head on the way there from court but it's nothing like that.
Could you elaborate more on what it's like please? Once I got to prison I realized it's nothing like the movies. Because it was all over the news when I was sentenced everyone in the jail knew who I was and what I was in for. I've made some good friends out it, people I am going to meet again once they are free. No one was ever violent towards me, you don't give any attitude you don't get any attitude. I did see some people get fucked up in there, mostly starts over something really silly, like a game of pool.
How did you pass the time? I used to pass the time playing chess with my cell mate or by watching all crazy people in there.
Did you personally encounter much violence in the prison? Or is it easy enough to stay away from it if you don't rock the boat or whatever? Well, most of the prison movies I have seen all show people stood at the bars, big guys growling "mmm fresh meat" and everyone getting stabbed up every 2 minuets. When you've never been to prison before you can't help but think back to every movie you've seen about prison.
When do you think the govt will evolve enough to have guys like you helping to grow our society? Right now it seeks to hunt you down...terrible waste of resources imo It is, there's a lot of talent rotting away in the prison system.
Administrations that in one breath expresses the need for engineers of digital space and then issues the order to capture the very people with such talents. Edit: its been many administrations haha :*( And many more to come!
Its wishful thinking but i hope that the economic imperative will win out as we progress to what can be depicted best by the Type I civilization coined by popular theoretical physicist Michio Kaku. Things need to change, that's for sure.
Is Milhouse a meme? Milhouse was the best meme!!
Do you like Wheatus? No, Wheatus sucks.
How do they ? Well I just like to suck wheats thats all.
What do you think - in Wrestlemania '98, did Mike Tyson get punched in the cock? Never watched it back then, I hope so!
Are you now like Gavin Orsay (Jimmi Simpson) on House of Cards? Never watched it, only just got out of prison I've heard a lot about that series, I'll look in to it.
Gavin in House of Cards has a guinea pig. Reminded me of "Noodles". :3. Hahaha.
the character Gavin is this hacker and there's a scene where he tells his FBI handler that they have to drop charges against Barrett Brown. Link to www.youtube.com Really?
Indeed. And check out who advised on the new season of HoC :3. Link to www.theguardian.com. HAHAHAHAHA.
Do they let you have PlayStation in British prisons? Link to www.dailymail.co.uk. They do if you buy the PlayStation.
What did you have in your cell? TV, Kettle, Radio, Bed, locker and that's it... I wasn't bothered about a play station, just used to play a lot of chess and poker.
What sort of people did you meet in association with the hacking groups? What kind of people are hackers? Out of everyone I have met there are only a small handful of people that I would put in to the "reverse engineehacker" bracket. Lots of people who know how to use exploits, not many who know how and why they work or are able to write their own, truly is a dieing art.
Do you ever think about trying to get hired for security for websites or for government computers or something along those lines? Again it's probably a trust issue...
Personally, I was very stupid and didn't really care about the ease with which personal information can spread, and didn't know how widespread NSA surveillance was. Given that a lot of stuff is out there already, if someone wanted to take the time to look at it, do you have any advice as to how to minimize the damage? Strong encryption is the key but to be honest, Internet Service Providers should be doing more to protect it's customers privacy, they should allow AES256 pipes for every customer as standard.
Many (fairly intelligent) people I talk to agree that they are concerned about surveillance and privacy on the internet, but they're resistant to try and use encryption or anything because they have it in their heads that only supergeniuses can understand computers like that. Do you have any suggestions for introducing these concepts to slightly technophobic people? I think encryption needs to be simplified for the regular user. It can get a bit confusing if you have never used it before or understand it's significance.
Also, wanted to thank you for your advice to the person below asking about how to learn programming. I know a little introductory Python, but I never really knew how to go from there to creating and understanding a whole big project. Programming languages too, learning new things is never easy, it's about determination and the will to succeed. The best way to learn is to read lots of source code and try to work out what is going on, maybe you could even improve on it?
How did you learn to hack? From learning to program.
Hacking is reverse engineering, it's an in depth knowledge of the underlying system/code/hardware/technology and the ability to take it apart piece by piece and reassemble it in to something else.
How long did it take you to become a proficient programmer? How did you learn? How long did it take you to become a proficient reverse engineer? How did you learn? I just learned from doing, trial and error. If there was something that I did not understand I would just research it, it sometimes helps to read it from more than one source. I used to just read lots of examples and try to make sense of them, if I found something new or something I did not understand I would research it.
As for time, I am unsure... I am still learning now, it is an on going process. All I can say is learn the basics and be creative, if there's something you do not understand research it, google always has the answer.
Have you only just got out of prison? I have been out a few weeks but I have only been on the internet a few days now.
Ever hear from anyone in that channel? Just one, those times are sadly gone.
When you got V&, they said two men where arrested for using the Kayla alias in some media. What happened there? The other person was my brother, they were unsure if it was him or me.
Ahh, You're poor brother... what happened when you got raided, how many people, where did they take you? I was home alone, they arrested me and took me to the police station for questioning. They told me during questioning that they had also been to arrest my brother.
Is human body very good build pc with very cheap soft?If it's so easy to exploit:( No it's a design prone to failure.
I want to learn Python 3. Codecademy is Python 2 (like all good tutorials...they seem to be for 2). Thanks for the links. I'll look into them. At the minuet I am going over logic, reading into some Verilog and other HDL because I want to experiment with some Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA).
Hey its Kayla! Hahaha.
Hey thanks for the advice in the thread . I'll definitely use that on my quest to getting my Computer science thread and furthering my programming language knowledge ! No problem.
Kayla, I just want to say thank you. Haha no problem.
Meanwhile, while you were in prison our gov't set up a fake twitter type service in Cuba with the intent of helping topple the Cuban gov't. -_- I'd like to see how you have come to this conclusion? Or is it official and that is it's official purpose?
I just find it ironic that while prosecuting with one hand the other is going to extreme lengths to topple a government with social media. It's usually the case.
You should try this at /netsec. Possibly, no way to link them over? I'll admit it, this is the first time I've ever used or been to reddit.
They would probably have a few more knowledgeable comments and questions. Doesn't seem like any of them took the bait!
Yea, go to /netsec and create a new post, and make it a link (to the url of this thread). Make the title basically the same, but bring up the fact that it's an xpost. Thanks, I'll do this after I've made a coffee!
My question: why didn't you guys get ahead of the game by targeting Google. They're the resident evil today. Care to explain?
I think he meant Umbrella Corp. They have their hands in everything, and are mercilessly expanding. Fist umbrella fuck with zombies, now google!
#tr0ll. Hahaha, I'd like to believe it but...

Who are some artists you draw inspiration from? I am always inspired by other artists. I wouldn't have a sound if it weren't for all the other artists I had learned from. Whether it be George Jones or Giorgio Moroder (my two tribute EP's I've been working on), or new bands like the ones i mentioned: Scott H Biram, Hellbound Glory, Black Mountain, Sturgill Simpson, Jack White even to black metal bands like Darkthrone, Mayhem and Burzum. Then there's my whole life in country, my dad, my mom, Cash, Keith Whitely, Vern Gosden, Jamey Johnson, Willie Nelson, Kristofferson... Billy Don Burns. I'm always being inspired.
You mentioned you play video games, which ones are you into currently? As for video games: I love them! I play tons of old ones. I have a few arcade machines I've collected over the years. Street Fighter II, a Nintendo Red Tent, Time Traveler Laserdisc Game. I love old games. I even collect old PC's. I just bought an old 486 with DOS so i could play the old PC games like King's Quest, and Space Quest on them again.
Space quest 4 FTW! :) I HAVE THE SQ4 SOUNDTRACK ON MY ITUNES.
Do u have a ftp server? I'd love to grab that, memories. I don't but i can pass it to you. Send me an email at [email protected] - i also have SQ1, LSL1, Codename: Iceman (one of my favorites) and a few others i can hightail to you.
I've recently become a huge fan of your music. Especially Hierophant. How is it possible that such a great record didn't get more attention? Do you attribute that to the music industry being lame, or is doing loads and loads of press just not your thing? Because that record is great. Thank you very much! 'Black Ribbons' will always be a crowning achievement for me. And I hope to really finish a project I've been working on for a long time that will be along those same lines. As far as the industry... at the time, they really weren't that interested in the album. When I finished it, I sent it to all the same kind of press outlets I used for my previous records for television and paper, and most of them felt it wasn't good to get behind. We had several television programs tell us it was "not tv-friendly" and we also had the BIGGEST of publications tell us they didn't want to get behind it. Also country radio protested advertising shows in any areas I had been in because I made a "anti-american" album. So i'm not too worried about it all... The lesson I learned is, once you put it out there, it has a life of it's own. I may not have made a lot of money off that album, but I've gotten the biggest opportunities of my life from people who were fans of that album. And I've gained the most loyal fan base I could ever ask for of Black Ribbons fans.
Do you feel you would be as successful as you are today if your dad had not had the success he has had? That's a hard question to answer. Considering, it's impossible to gauge this kind of thing... but I will say that my dad being who he is has certainly gotten me in some doors, but it has also created a lot of walls that a new artist with no family history doesn't have to scale. For instance, a lot of people have a pre-formed impression of me to begin with, so i have to work against that until they finally open up to try and figure out what I am about without him in the picture. another example is going out there under my name for the first, it''s very hard to delineate from the beginning who is there because they don't know anything but your music and like your music and that is is... some people come just because they like my dad, which I am grateful for, but they usually aren't very open to the risks that I take musically. So that can kind of work against me and frustrate me at times. But ultimately, i am very grateful for the life i have and for the father and mother i have...
Can you talk about your personal opinions on the Illuminati and NWO conspiracy? I've noticed you have been using alot more symbolism in your videos... Are you with their ideology or against it? Thanks a lot for the kind words. The Colonel rules for sure...
Also, You and Jon Hensley are two of the nicest dudes in the business... Please stay cool and humble as F**K! lol. I am not FOR the Illuminati and the NWO, that would be silly haha! I don't necessarily believe there is like 6 hooded dudes pulling all the strings, but I believe heavily that the media, and culture are controlled very strategically by groups of people tied to banks, congress, etc. Bilderberg is real, and there are a lot of shapes and forms of Bilderberg-type organizations in film, music, pretty much any profession. My opinion is do the RIGHT thing, do the RIGHT thing for your family first, your heart and your passion, and your friends. Cultivate that stuff, attempt to build your LOCAL community as much as you can, and ultimately, if someone is trying to force you to do something you don't want to do, especially if it goes against your personal beliefs, then you have ALL the right to speak loud in defiance. I read about all this stuff, and i try to tie other deeper messages into my music and artwork, so thank you for being someone that looked beyond the surface!
How do you feel about the smaller cryptocoin markets, in particular dodgecoin? I think that bitcoin is always going to be the important currency, and I wonder how the side-chain developing technology will affect the alt coin market, but i've spent my time on cryptsy and I have about 60k dogecoin sitting around. I built a script mining rig, kind of for fun, and mined for a while will it. But now the Scrypt ASICs are flooding the market and I've stuck with my bitcoin. But ultimately I feel like the community built behind dogecoin and litecoin as well as a few other stand-out altcoins is far much stronger and more real than say something like Etherium and Darkcoin. I just can't currently get behind these other currencies when obviously BTC and the block-chain are the backbone of this stuff, and Proof Of Work is still the only purely decentralized system of transaction confirmation.
Hey shooter. Just wanted to say I'm a big fan of your music. I recently lost my dad and "it ain't easy" helped me get through some really tough times. Thanks for that song man. Can you please talk about what that song means to you? Thank you so much for saying that. "It Ain't Easy" was an emotional moment for me. We had had some great traction with the first record and my song "4th of July". When we had finished "Electric Rodeo", the cover of Hank Jr's "The Living Proof" was the last song on the record. We threw out our first single to radio and they threw it right back and told us they wouldn't play it. It just got me down, because I was hoping to really use our moment in the sun to influence the sound of country in a more open direction for all these other artists I'd become fans of... But they didn't, and it hurt in a way. Rejection or whatever... And in that moment I really wished my dad was around to talk to, so this was my way of talking to him. It means a lot to me when people say that song means something to them. It makes me feel like I got an answer back, you know what I mean?
Do you believe in God or practice any kind of religion? Your dad was always a very spiritual person from what I've heard... but not necessarily a big fan of organized religion. Was that the case? I'm pretty much the same way. I was raised in a Christian household because of my mom, but my dad never really participated in church or anything, and honestly i was just running away from it the minute i went. I hate dressing up and having to go act proper in a place. So that always makes me feel like i'm being held captive. but I do believe in a higher power, and I do believe, no matter what happens or what is out there, the moral decisions you make in your life affect the outcome of your children and the future of the world. I am also very deep into science, so i have a very rational mind when it comes to stuff in the bible etc, but i am infatuated by religion and i believe that we are all in good hands...
Shooter, loved you on the Joe Rogan experience and love your music. You talked about you and your dad watching horror movies so I want to know what are some of your favorite scary movies? Some of my favorites are The Shining, Beyond the Black Rainbow, The Objective... There's a lot but I can't think of them all! I rarely find one that scares me. The Innkeepers was great... Of course the classics like Poltergeist and the original slasher movies. I used to watch late night USA network when I was a kid and get a great bunch of B-Rate glory.
There's one that my dad woke me up late night to see one night. I never have found it. It was one of those "a bunch of people in a house during an insane rain storm and they keep getting killed one by one". All i remember is a scene with an old man who was missing and they found him in a closet covered in Bees or some kind of bug. Wish I could find this!
Growing up and currently did you have any contact with the highwaymen? I was 5 when the first Highwaymen tour happened and I had the good fortune of traveling with them, and again when I was around 10. Those families were very close to my heart, and us children all stay in touch. I will see Willie and Kris both from time to time, and they are so kind and supportive. I'm very proud of our friendships and to be part of that inner sanctum. Let me tell you this, that was about the most real group of people to put together on stage that ever existed. It's breathtaking to even look back on it. Of course, as a kid, i could have cared less, I wanted to find the closest arcade. So did the other kids, so ha!
*Loved the Southern Independent Vols 1-3!! * I still include many of the songs in my playlists. What would you say the impact of that project was and will you do it again? I really felt good about that and the XXX stuff we were doing. Even though opposition from camps of people who were more interested in protecting their value in the scene vs. helping the artists they "care so much fore" really drove it away, I got to know a lot of great artists that way and I've worked with a few of them in the studio. I think the best thing it did for me is make me aware of these bands and be able to not only be inspired by them, but help any way i can (whether it be playing them on the radio or just spreading the word among friends). Those collections are available as part of the BCR BAZAAR for free. If you want access to it, just email us at [email protected].

How to buy basic electronics, phone plans, computers, etc. Partial finance thread.

So, you're out from under your parent's nose and you need your own stuff to cut contact or just become independent. You're reading this, so I will assume that you A. Have at least one method of connecting, whether it be a smartphone, laptop, tablet, etc. And B. You have the skills to operate everything but just don't know what's good and what could get you in trouble. I'm also going to assume that your budget is LOW if you're just starting out.
Computers
Where to buy: * Stores like Best Buy, walmart, target (Expensive, new things only) * "Mom and pop" computer stores (Cheaper, used/refurbished) * Craigslist/Ebay (Cheapest most times, used, just old models, refurbished)
What to look for:
Think about what you need it for. College? Internet only? Work computer with Microsoft Office installed? Or are you needing a gaming computer or something for mining bitcoin or something super speed? If you're needing a computer more for college or work or basic internet, you'll be okay with getting an older system or used system. If you are needing a gaming rig, it will be costlier. Below are some specifications you may need for either type.
Work/College - Anything single core or dual core processor, 2GB (Gigs) RAM, and 250GB hard drive or better (Higher of everything is better). Either Windows 7 or 8 is fine. Make sure Microsoft Office is installed, although if you find a good deal that doesn't have it, you can download OpenOffice as a free program alternative. Be aware, it may not be the best depending on your work or school needs.
Gaming - Gaming specs change rapidly based on the games you prefer playing. If you're into the old-school games, you'll want at least a dual-core processor, 4GB ram, and 500GB hard drive along with a NON-integrated graphics card with at least 250MB RAM onboard. If you like the new stuff and want to play the latest games as of 2014, you're going to need something with a quad core processor, GTX/HD/GT video card with 1GB or more onboard RAM. Also, 4-8GB computer RAM and 1TB hard drive.
Laptops- You can decrease those numbers given a little bit if you're looking for a laptop.
*Tablets- *If you're going to buy a tablet, make sure you get the things you need on it and be aware, exactly, of what you need. Do you need a USB port? Extra keyboard because you intend to use it as a laptop? Then you might wanna go more the Microsoft Surface route. If not, and you like apps and such, go more the Android route.
Phone- Your choices are Iphone, Android, and Windows Phone, and older non-smart phones. The cost is anywhere from $30-120 a month. Buy at any phone shop, Verizon, US Cellular, Virgin Mobile, or other, it depends on your area. Sadly, these are generally your only choices as buying phones off craigslist does NOT generally come with a phone plan/phone number. You must enter a contract generally. (There are some non-contract options out there. I know nothing about them except I do know they are pre-paid only.) Phone contracts- Be very, very, very careful when it comes to signing up for a phone contract. There are few choices nowadays and all of them have nice fine print that could mean you paying hundreds of dollars extra for this or that service, or problem. Phone contracts have a MINIMUM length. By signing up for one, you're saying you will pay whatever you owe, for the whole year (or two). Ask questions. If you have to cancel before the contract is up - what fees are there? What fees are there for this or that service? What happens when you need an upgrade, do you have to sign another contract? Is there a minimum time before you can upgrade? What's the internet data limit? Etc. Phone itself - Make sure you 1. Get all your needs. Bigger screen, smaller keyboard, memory card, EXTRA CHARGER (I can't say that enough. Specially with Apple products.) Extra battery also. Get as much as you can free with your contract/purchase.
TV Do not go overboard. Like with computers, make a list of the things you'd like your TV to be able to do. Internet capable? Certain screen size or quality output? (32" vs 40") (1080p vs 720p, 3d mode). Certain options (Firewire port? USB ports? Surround sound ports?) Don't get above what you need, regardless of how cool it is. Measure your space before buying. Determine how it will stand, or how it will connect to the wall if you're wall mounting it. Let the pros wall mount it if you've never done it before - TVs are heavy!
warranty purchase (FOR ALL ELECTRONICS!) - Some people say the warranty isn't worth it. I personally disagree. Get at least a 1 year Warranty. If you can't afford it, you can't afford the item. My story: I bought a DVD player once, and got a 1 year warranty. 11 months later, it suddenly died while playing my favorite movie. I took it in, said there's a disc stuck and I'd like to repair it, and two weeks later I was given the disc and a new DVD player because mine couldn't be repaired, no fuss. Bought another warranty for the new one, and I still have the thing to this day. Buy the blasted warranty. Keep the paperwork of the warranty and the electronic papers/cds/cables/etc in the safest possible spot you can put it in.
*Financing a purchase: * 1. Don't unless it is absolutely positively necessary for your job/college. Gaming is not a requirement to make you money (Unless you're a youtube star or something.) 2. If you have to, get a credit card SEPARATELY from the credit cards available at shops like Best Buy. Those things will rip you off with high interest. Search for a credit card with 0% interest for 6-12 months. Pay with your purchase with that and commit to paying it off within that 6-12 months time frame. 3. If you can't pay it off in 6-12 months, don't buy the item. You can't afford it. Save your money up or buy a less-expensive item. You can ALWAYS buy a new thing that fits your needs better once you have the money for it.
Feel free to ask questions. Or correct me.
